Join Roger Walsh in Breaking the Cycle of Nuclear Madness [This Friday]

Dear Reader,

As the U.S. considers resuming nuclear testing and global tensions rise, Dr. Roger Walsh and Dr. Howard Kornfeld invite you to a critical and timely discussion:

Breaking the Cycle:
Undoing the Addictive Roots of Nuclear Madness

Friday, November 21, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. PST
In-Person & Streaming Online
2820 Seventh Street, Berkeley, CA

This event revisits one of humanity’s greatest existential threats – the specter of nuclear weapons – through the interconnected lenses of consciousness, activism, and the psychology and treatment of addiction.

Why Now?

Addiction medicine teaches us that awareness and compassion are the first steps toward breaking destructive cycles. The same holds true for society at large. We believe it’s time to confront the addictive roots of our collective crises and begin a process of global recovery.

In this 90-minute event, Dr. Walsh and Dr. Kornfeld explore a lineage of thought that connects medicine, psychiatry, and recovery movements to the addictive dimensions of power and humanity’s enduring quest for peace. Building upon the insights of great thinkers like Gregory Bateson, Robert J. Lifton, Joanna Macy, Jerry Brown, and Dr. Walsh himself, they consider how the same compulsive forces that drive personal addiction underlie the collective escalation of nuclear armament, and inquire how insights from recovery medicine, consciousness studies, and integrative psychiatry can help us imagine a more compassionate and sustainable world.

About the Speakers

Dr. Howard Kornfeld, Director of Recovery Without Walls, is a pioneer in addiction medicine and psychedelic research. He has been active in nuclear disarmament efforts for over forty years, including serving as a Delegate to the first International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (Nobel Peace Prize, 1985).

Dr. Roger Walsh, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, Philosophy, and Anthropology at UC Irvine, is the author of Essential Spirituality and Staying Alive: The Psychology of Human Survival. His work bridges psychology, spirituality, and global ethics. He is also the co-host of the popular podcast Deep Transformation: Self-Society-Spirit, as you know!

There are many things in today’s world to fear. Nuclear war shouldn’t have to be one of them.

Please join us for this urgent, thought-provoking evening.

Warmly,

Roger Walsh & the Deep Transformation team
